The terminal voltage of a cell is its emf minus the voltage drop across its own internal resistance: V=ε−IrV = \varepsilon - Ir.

When a cell of emf ε\varepsilon and internal resistance rr delivers current II to an external circuit, some of the emf is used up in driving the current through the cell's own internal resistance. By energy conservation (Kirchhoff's voltage law) around the circuit:

ε=V+Ir\varepsilon = V + Ir

where VV is the terminal potential difference (the p.d. actually available across the external circuit/cell terminals). Equivalently,

V=ε−IrV = \varepsilon - Ir
