Coulomb's law gives the force between two point charges as F=kq1q2/r2F = kq_1q_2/r^2, acting along the line joining them.

Coulomb's law states that the electrostatic force of attraction or repulsion between two stationary point charges is

  • directly proportional to the product of the magnitudes of the two charges, and
  • inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them,

and it acts along the straight line joining the two charges.

F=14πε0q1q2r2=kq1q2r2F = \dfrac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0}\dfrac{q_1q_2}{r^2} = k\dfrac{q_1q_2}{r^2}

where ε0\varepsilon_0 is the permittivity of free space and k=14πε0≈9×109 N m2/C2k = \dfrac{1}{4\pi\varepsilon_0} \approx 9\times10^9\ \text{N m}^2/\text{C}^2 is the electrostatic (Coulomb) constant.

In vector form, the force on charge q1q_1 due to q2q_2 is …
