GPS consists of a constellation of navigation satellites orbiting the Earth, each continuously broadcasting radio-frequency (microwave, electromagnetic) signals containing its precise position and the exact time the signal was transmitted (from an onboard atomic clock). A GPS receiver on the ground (or on a vehicle, ship, aircraft, mobile phone, etc.) picks up signals from at least four such satellites simultaneously.
