X-rays are short-wavelength EM waves - highly penetrating and undeflected by fields; used in medical radiography.

Two important properties of X-rays:

  1. High penetrating power / short wavelength: X-rays are electromagnetic waves of very short wavelength (about 10−810^{-8} to 10−1110^{-11} m). They travel in straight lines with the speed of light and can penetrate materials opaque to visible light (soft tissue), being absorbed more strongly by denser materials such as bone and metal. They also affect photographic plates and cause certain materials to fluoresce.
  2. Not deflected by electric or magnetic fields: Being uncharged electromagnetic radiation (not particles), X-rays are unaffected by electric and magnetic fields, and they can ionise gases and exhibit interference and diffraction (used in X-ray crystallography). …
