Paramagnetic materials are weakly attracted into a magnetic field (small positive susceptibility); diamagnetic materials are weakly repelled from it (small negative susceptibility).

Point 1 — Behaviour in a magnetic field: Paramagnetic substances (e.g. aluminium, sodium) are weakly attracted towards regions of stronger magnetic field — a rod of paramagnetic material aligns along the field. Diamagnetic substances (e.g. bismuth, copper, water) are weakly repelled from a magnetic field — a rod aligns perpendicular to the field.
