Force per unit length F/L = mu0 I1 I2 / (2 pi d), attractive; the ampere is defined from the 2 x 10^-7 N/m rule.

Force between parallel currents: Two long, straight, parallel conductors separated by distance d and carrying currents I1I_1 and I2I_2 exert a force on each other. The force per unit length is

FL=μ0I1I22πd.\frac{F}{L} = \frac{\mu_0 I_1 I_2}{2\pi d}.

When the currents are in the same direction the force is attractive (in opposite directions it is repulsive).

Definition of the ampere: Put I1=I2=1 AI_1 = I_2 = 1\,A and d=1 md = 1\,m in vacuum. Then

FL=(4π×10−7)(1)(1)2π(1)=2×10−7 N/m.\frac{F}{L} = \frac{(4\pi\times10^{-7})(1)(1)}{2\pi(1)} = 2\times10^{-7}\,N/m. …
