For a real image magnified twice by a convex lens of f = 5 m, the object must be placed at 7.5 m from the lens.

For a real, inverted image, the magnification is negative: m=v/u=−2m = v/u = -2 (magnitude 2, real image).

Let the object distance be u=−xu = -x (negative by sign convention, x>0x>0). Then:

v=mu=(−2)(−x)=2xv = mu = (-2)(-x) = 2x

Using the lens formula:

1v−1u=1f\frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f}

12x−1−x=1f\frac{1}{2x} - \frac{1}{-x} = \frac{1}{f}

12x+1x=1f\frac{1}{2x} + \frac{1}{x} = \frac{1}{f}

1+22x=1f  ⟹  32x=1f  ⟹  x=3f2\frac{1+2}{2x} = \frac{1}{f} \implies \frac{3}{2x} = \frac{1}{f} \implies x = \frac{3f}{2}

With f=5f = 5 m: …
