Two coherent, monochromatic sources of nearly equal amplitude give a sustained fringe pattern; bright fringes occur where the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths, dark fringes where it is a half-integer number.

Conditions for sustained interference:

  1. The two sources must be COHERENT — they must emit light waves of the same frequency (wavelength) that maintain a CONSTANT phase difference with time. Without this, the interference pattern would shift too rapidly to be observed (this is why two independent light sources, e.g. two separate bulbs, never show a stable interference pattern — practically, coherent sources are obtained by splitting light from a single source, as in Young's double slit).
  2. The sources should be MONOCHROMATIC (single wavelength), otherwise fringes of different colours overlap and wash out the pattern.
  3. The two waves reaching a point should have nearly EQUAL amplitude, so that the dark fringes are (nearly) completely dark, giving good contrast between bright and dark fringes.
  4. The two sources should be narrow and close together, and the pattern observed on a screen far away, so path differences remain small compared to the source–screen distance.

Conditions for maxima and minima (in terms of path difference Δ, where Δ = S_2P − S_1P for a point P):
