Demonetisation was a 2016 government move that withdrew high-value notes, attacked black money, acted as a tax measure and promoted a cashless economy.

Four features of demonetisation in India:

  1. Withdrawal of legal tender — On 8 November 2016 the Government withdrew the legal-tender status of the ₹500 and ₹1000 currency notes, so they could no longer be used for transactions and had to be deposited/exchanged in banks.

  2. A moral/ethical stand against black money — Demonetisation reflected the view that tax evasion and the holding of unaccounted (black) money are an unethical practice that harms honest taxpayers and society; it aimed to make such hoarding worthless.

  3. A tax-administration measure — By forcing cash into the banking system, it brought unaccounted money into the formal economy and the tax net, widening the tax base and discouraging tax evasion, fake currency and corruption.
