A consumer must be aware, cautious, insist on proof of purchase and complain against genuine defects — these are among his key responsibilities.

Under the spirit of the Consumer Protection Act, a consumer is expected not only to claim rights but also to discharge certain responsibilities:

  1. Be aware of rights — The consumer should know his rights (safety, information, choice, to be heard, redressal, consumer education) and exercise them when buying goods and services.

  2. Be a cautious and informed buyer — He should not be careless; he must read labels, check the quality, quantity, price, ISI/Agmark/Hallmark certification and the expiry date before purchasing, and not be misled by advertisements.

  3. Insist on a cash memo/bill — He should always obtain and keep a cash memo or bill, as it is proof of purchase and is needed while filing a complaint.
