Financial management aims chiefly at maximising shareholders' wealth, along with timely availability, optimum use and safety of funds, a sound capital structure and adequate liquidity.

Six main objectives of financial management:

  1. Maximisation of shareholders' wealth — The primary objective is to maximise the wealth of shareholders, reflected in the maximum market value (price) of the firm's shares. Every financial decision is taken with this goal in view.

  2. Ensuring availability of adequate funds — Financial management ensures that the business has enough funds available at the right time to meet its short-term and long-term needs, so that operations and growth are not hampered for want of money.

  3. Optimum/efficient utilisation of funds — It ensures that the funds raised are used efficiently and productively, so that no funds lie idle and every rupee earns an adequate return.

  4. Maintaining a sound/optimum capital structure — It aims to raise funds from the best mix of sources (debt and equity) so that the cost of capital is minimised and the financial risk is kept within safe limits.
