Delegation is passing authority from one superior to one subordinate; decentralisation is the organisation-wide dispersal of authority.

Four differences between delegation and decentralisation:

  1. Meaning — Delegation is the process by which a superior entrusts part of his duties and authority to a subordinate. Decentralisation is the systematic delegation of authority throughout the organisation, down to the lowest levels — it is the end result of extensive delegation.

  2. Scope — Delegation is a relationship between two individuals (one superior and one subordinate). Decentralisation relates to the whole organisation, involving all departments and levels.

  3. Nature / necessity — Delegation is essential and unavoidable; no manager can do all the work alone, so some delegation always takes place. Decentralisation is an optional policy decision of top management; an organisation may choose to remain centralised.
