Unity of command = one subordinate, one boss; unity of direction = one head and one plan for activities with a common objective.

Four differences between unity of command and unity of direction:

  1. Meaning — Unity of command means that an employee should receive orders and be responsible to only one superior at a time. Unity of direction means that all activities having the same objective should have one head and one plan.

  2. Scope / relates to — Unity of command relates to an individual employee (the superior-subordinate link). Unity of direction relates to a whole group or department of activities pursuing a common goal.

  3. Purpose / problem avoided — Unity of command avoids dual subordination (receiving conflicting orders from many bosses), confusion and conflict. Unity of direction avoids overlapping and duplication of activities and effort.
