At every step of a food chain, roughly 90% of the energy is lost as heat, so only ~10% passes on to the next trophic level -- this is why food chains rarely extend beyond 4-5 levels.

Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional, moving from producers to successive levels of consumers through a food chain. At each trophic level, organisms use a large part of the energy they receive for their own respiration, movement, growth and other metabolic activities, and this used energy is ultimately dissipated as heat into the environment (in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics -- no energy transfer is 100% efficient). Only the energy that remains stored in the organism's body (as biomass) is available to be passed on to the next trophic level when it is eaten.

The American ecologist Raymond Lindeman formulated the Ten Percent Law, which states that during the transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next, only about 10% of the energy is transferred and stored as biomass at the next level, while approximately 90% is lost as heat/respiration.
