Malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium, transmitted by the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito, and shows recurrent chill-and-fever cycles.

From the CBSE/NCERT Human Health and Disease chapter:

Causative agent: the protozoan Plasmodium — the important species are P. vivax, P. falciparum (malignant malaria), P. malariae and P. ovale.

Symptoms:

  • Recurring bouts of high fever accompanied by chills and shivering at regular intervals (typically every 3-4 days, when the parasites and toxin haemozoin are released as RBCs burst).
  • Headache, body ache, nausea and sweating; anaemia and weakness in prolonged cases.

Modes of transmission:
