Double salts fall apart into simple ions in water; coordination compounds keep their complex ion together.

Double salts and coordination (complex) compounds are both formed by combining two or more simple stable compounds in stoichiometric ratio, but they behave very differently in solution:

  1. Existence in solution / retention of identity: A double salt loses its identity completely when dissolved in water and dissociates fully into its simple constituent ions. For example, Mohr's salt, FeSO4⋅(NH4)2SO4⋅6H2OFeSO_4\cdot(NH_4)_2SO_4\cdot6H_2O, dissociates in water to give Fe2+Fe^{2+}, NH4+NH_4^+ and SO42−SO_4^{2-} ions, each of which can be individually tested for. A coordination compound, e.g. K4[Fe(CN)6]K_4[Fe(CN)_6], dissociates only into K+K^+ ions and the complex [Fe(CN)6]4−[Fe(CN)_6]^{4-} ion; the complex ion does NOT further break down into simple Fe2+Fe^{2+} and CN−CN^- ions. …
