(a) Three differences between Lanthanoids and Actinoids:
- Lanthanoids involve the progressive filling of 4f orbitals; actinoids involve the progressive filling of 5f orbitals.
- Lanthanoids mostly and predominantly show the +3 oxidation state (with a few +2/+4 exceptions); actinoids show a much wider range of oxidation states (+3 to +7), because 5f, 6d and 7s energies are close together.
- Except promethium, lanthanoids are not radioactive; nearly all actinoids are radioactive. (Additional valid differences: actinoids have a greater tendency to form complexes than lanthanoids; 5f electrons are less effectively shielded than 4f, so actinoid contraction is more irregular than lanthanoid contraction.)
(b) Why are Cu²⁺ salts coloured while Zn²⁺ salts are colourless?
Colour in transition-metal ions typically arises from d–d electronic transitions — an electron absorbing visible light and jumping from a lower-energy to a higher-energy d-orbital (split by the ligand field).
