Cu+Cu^+ is unstable in water because it disproportionates to Cu2+Cu^{2+} and CuCu; Cu2+Cu^{2+}'s much larger hydration enthalpy outweighs the extra ionisation energy needed to remove a second electron.

In aqueous solution, Cu+Cu^+ undergoes disproportionation:

2Cu+(aq)→Cu2+(aq)+Cu(s)2Cu^+(aq) \rightarrow Cu^{2+}(aq) + Cu(s)

This happens because although converting Cu+→Cu2+Cu^+ \rightarrow Cu^{2+} requires additional (second) ionisation energy, the hydration enthalpy of the smaller, more highly charged Cu2+Cu^{2+} ion is very large and more than compensates for this energy cost. The high hydration enthalpy of Cu2+Cu^{2+} makes it thermodynamically more stable in aqueous medium than Cu+Cu^+, so Cu+Cu^+ spontane …
