Young's double slit gives bright/dark fringes from interference of two coherent beams; the fringe width is beta = lambda D / d.

Young arrangement produce interference pattern
Young arrangement produce interference pattern

Set-up: Monochromatic light illuminates a single slit, which then lights two close, parallel slits S1 and S2 (separation d). Because both slits derive from one source they are coherent (constant phase difference). Their waves overlap on a screen a distance D away and interfere, producing a pattern of bright and dark bands (fringes).

Path difference: Consider a point P on the screen at distance y from the centre O. The path difference between the waves from S2 and S1 reaching P is (for D much greater than d):

path difference = d y / D.

Conditions for fringes:

  • Bright fringe (constructive): path difference = m lambda, so d y / D = m lambda, giving y(bright) = m lambda D / d, with m = 0, 1, 2, ...
  • Dark fringe (destructive): path difference = (m + 1/2) lambda, so y(dark) = (m + 1/2) lambda D / d.

Fringe width (beta): the distance between two consecutive bright fringes (or two consecutive dark fringes). For bright fringes of order m and (m + 1):

beta = y(m+1) - y(m) = [(m+1) lambda D / d] - [m lambda D / d] …
