Double circulation means blood travels through the heart twice per complete circuit — via a pulmonary loop (heart-lungs-heart) and a systemic loop (heart-body-heart) — which keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate.

In humans (and other mammals/birds), the heart is four-chambered, and blood follows two separate circuits, both starting and ending at the heart:

  1. Pulmonary circulation: Deoxygenated blood from the body, collected in the right atrium, passes to the right ventricle, which pumps it via the pulmonary artery to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood is oxygenated (CO2 released, O2 taken up) and returns via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium.
  2. Systemic circulation: The oxygenated blood in the left atrium passes to the left ventricle, which pumps it via the aorta to all the tissues/organs of the body. There, oxygen and nutrients are delivered and CO2/wastes are picked up; the resulting deoxygenated blood returns via the venae cavae to the right atrium. …
