PTH is a hypercalcemic hormone — it raises blood Ca²⁺ by acting on bone, kidney and (indirectly) intestine.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH), secreted by the parathyroid glands, is the principal hormone regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Its functions include:

  1. Bone — PTH stimulates osteoclast activity, promoting bone resorption (demineralisation), which releases stored Ca²⁺ (and phosphate) from bone matrix into the blood.
  2. Kidney — PTH increases the reabsorption of Ca²⁺ in the renal tubules (reducing calcium loss in urine), while simultaneously increasing the excretion of phosphate.
  3. Intestine — PTH indirectly increases intestinal absorption of Ca²⁺ by stimulating the kidney to activate vitamin D (calcitriol), which in turn enhances calcium uptake in the gut. …
