Renin is secreted by juxtaglomerular cells and functions to raise blood pressure via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

The juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGA) is a specialised sensory region located where the distal convoluted tubule of a nephron touches the afferent arteriole supplying that nephron's glomerulus. It consists of juxtaglomerular (JG) cells (modified smooth muscle cells of the afferent arteriole wall) and the macula densa (specialised cells of the distal tubule).

When blood pressure/blood flow to the kidney falls (or when NaCl concentration reaching the macula densa drops), the JG cells secrete renin. Renin acts as an enzyme, converting the blood protein angiotensinogen into angiotensin I, which is then converted (by ACE, mainly in the lungs) to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II:
