Muscle tissue in the human body is of three types — skeletal (striated, voluntary), smooth (unstriated, involuntary), and cardiac (striated, involuntary) — each suited to a different function.

1. Skeletal (striated) muscle:

  • Attached to bones (via tendons) and responsible for voluntary movements of the body (e.g. limb movement, chewing).
  • Fibres are long, cylindrical, unbranched, and multinucleate (many nuclei per fibre, located peripherally).
  • Shows alternating light and dark bands (striations) under the microscope, due to the regular arrangement of actin and myosin filaments.
  • Contraction is under conscious (voluntary) control and is generally rapid but tires (fatigues) quickly.

2. Smooth (non-striated/visceral) muscle:

  • Found in the walls of internal (visceral) organs — e.g. the alimentary canal, blood vessels, urinary bladder, uterus, iris of the eye.
  • Fibres are spindle-shaped (tapering at both ends), unbranched, and uninucleate (single, centrally placed nucleus).
  • Lacks visible striations, as the contractile filaments are not as regularly arranged as in skeletal muscle.
  • Contraction is involuntary (not under conscious control) and typically slow, sustained, and resistant to fatigue — suited to functions like peristalsis.

3. Cardiac muscle:

  • Found only in the wall of the heart (myocardium). …
