A joint is where two skeletal elements meet; synovial joints are freely movable joints containing a fluid-filled cavity, and the shoulder (ball-and-socket) and knee/elbow (hinge) are classic examples.

A joint is defined as the point of articulation between two or more bones, or between a bone and cartilage, in the skeletal system. Joints may be immovable (fibrous, e.g. skull sutures), slightly movable (cartilaginous, e.g. between vertebrae), or freely movable (synovial), depending on the tissue connecting the bones.

Synovial joints are characterised by a fluid-filled joint (synovial) cavity between the articulating bones, lined by a synovial membrane that secretes lubricating synovial fluid, and are the most freely movable joint type. Examples include:
