Fertilisation in earthworms is external to the body — it takes place inside a mucus cocoon deposited in the soil, not within either parent's body.

Earthworms (e.g. Pheretima) are hermaphrodite (bisexual) but practise cross-fertilisation, avoiding self-fertilisation:

  1. During copulation, two earthworms align themselves head-to-tail and mutually exchange sperm; the received sperm is stored in the partner's spermathecae.
  2. Separately, the clitellum (a glandular girdle region) secretes a mucus/albumin sheath that hardens into a cocoon.
  3. This cocoon slides forward over the worm's body. As it passes the female genital pore, ova are deposited into it; as it passes the spermathecal openings, the previously stored sperm (received from the mate) is released into it as well.
  4. The cocoon finally slips off over the worm's head end and is left in the soil, sealed at both ends. …
