Valence Bond Theory originated with Heitler and London's 1927 quantum-mechanical treatment of the H2 molecule, and was later developed further by Pauling and Slater.

Before 1927, chemical bond formation could not be explained on a sound quantum-mechanical basis. Walter Heitler and Fritz London applied quantum mechanics to the hydrogen molecule (H2) and showed that a covalent bond forms when atomic orbitals with unpaired electrons of opposite spin overlap, lowering the energy of the system.
