At constant pressure, ΔH and ΔU are related by ΔH = ΔU + ΔnRT, where Δn is the change in the number of moles of gas in the reaction.

Enthalpy is defined as H = U + PV. For a reaction carried out at constant pressure, taking the change between products and reactants:

ΔH = ΔU + Δ(PV) = ΔU + PΔV (at constant P)

For reactions involving ideal gases, PV = nRT, so at constant temperature and pressure, PΔV = Δn(gas) × RT, where Δn(gas) = (moles of gaseous products) − (moles of gaseous reactants). Substituting:

ΔH = ΔU + Δn(gas) RT
