Gibbs energy change (ΔG = ΔH − TΔS) is the single criterion that tells us, from the system's own properties, whether a process will occur spontaneously.

Gibbs (free) energy is defined as G = H − TS, where H is enthalpy, T is absolute temperature, and S is entropy. For a process occurring at constant temperature and pressure, the change in Gibbs energy is:

ΔG = ΔH − TΔS

The second law of thermodynamics says a process is spontaneous only if it increases the total entropy of the universe (system + surroundings). Working this through mathematically for a constant T, P system shows that ΔG (a property of the system alone) directly tracks this total entropy change: ΔSuniverse is positive exactly when ΔG (of the system) is negative. This lets us judge spontaneity using system properties alone, without tracking the surroundings separately:

  • ΔG < 0: the process is spontaneous (proceeds on its own in the stated direction).
  • ΔG = 0: the system is at equilibrium — no net driving force in either direction. …
