Newton's third law: for every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force, acting on a different body, simultaneously.

Newton's third law states: 'To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and they act on two different bodies.' If body A exerts a force F→_AB on body B, then body B simultaneously exerts a force F→_BA on body A, such that F→_BA = −F→_AB (equal in magnitude, opposite in direction). Crucially, these two forces act on DIFFERENT bodies (never on the same body), so they never cancel each other out for a single object, even though they are equal and opposite.

Two examples:

  1. Walking: when a person walks, their foot pushes backward against the ground (action); the ground, in reaction, pushes the foot forward with an equal force, which propels the person forward. …
