Four key fluid-surface concepts: surface tension (force/length), surface energy (work/area, numerically equal to surface tension), viscosity (internal friction between fluid layers), and angle of contact (the angle the liquid surface makes with the solid at their meeting point).

  1. Surface tension: The free surface of a liquid behaves like a stretched elastic membrane, tending to minimize its area. Surface tension (T) is defined as the force acting per unit length on either side of an imaginary line drawn on the liquid surface, acting tangentially to the surface and perpendicular to the line, tending to pull the surface together. SI unit: N/m.
  2. Surface energy: Because the surface behaves like a stretched membrane, increasing the surface area requires work to be done against the surface tension force (to pull molecules from the bulk to the surface, against intermolecular attraction). Surface energy is the potential energy stored per unit area of the liquid surface, i.e. the work done per unit increase in surface area. It is numerically equal to the surface tension: surface energy (J/m²) = surface tension (N/m), since N/m = J/m².
  3. Viscosity: When a fluid flows, different layers move at different velocities (e.g. faster in the middle of a pipe, slower near the walls). Viscosity is the property of a fluid by virtue of which it opposes the relative motion between its adjacent layers — an internal frictional force that acts tangentially between layers, opposing relative sliding. It is quantified by the coefficient of viscosity η, appearing in Newton's law of viscous flow, F = η A (dv/dx), with SI unit Pa·s (or poise in CGS). …
