The Magnus effect is the curved (deviated) path taken by a spinning object moving through a fluid, due to unequal air pressure on its two sides (a Bernoulli's-principle consequence).

When a ball spins as it moves through air (e.g. a cricket ball bowled with spin, or a football given 'banana' swerve), it drags a thin layer of air around with it due to friction/viscosity. On one side of the ball, this dragged air layer moves in the SAME direction as the oncoming airflow, so the net air speed on that side is higher; on the opposite side, the dragged layer moves AGAINST the oncoming air, so the net air speed there is lower. By Bernoulli's principle (P + ½ρv² = constant along a streamline), the side with higher air speed has LOWER pressure, and the side with lower air speed has HIGHER pressure.
