The Celsius and Fahrenheit scales coincide at −40° — that is, −40°C = −40°F.

The relation between the Celsius (C) and Fahrenheit (F) scales is:

C/5 = (F − 32)/9

We want the temperature at which the numerical readings are equal, so set C = F = x:

x/5 = (x − 32)/9

Cross-multiplying:

9x = 5(x − 32)

9x = 5x − 160

9x − 5x = −160

4x = −160

x = −40
