Mean absolute error is the average size of the individual errors in a set of measurements; relative error normalizes this by the mean value to express the error as a fraction (often given as a percentage).

Suppose a quantity is measured n times, giving values a1, a2, ..., an, with mean amean = (a1+a2+...+an)/n.

The absolute error in each measurement is the magnitude of the deviation from the mean: Δai = |amean − ai|.

Mean absolute error, Δamean, is the average of these individual absolute errors:

Δamean = (|Δa1| + |Δa2| + ... + |Δan|) / n

It tells us, on average, how far individual readings typically deviate from the mean, and has the same units as the quantity itself.

Relative error is the mean absolute error expressed as a fraction of the mean value of the quantity measured:

relative error = Δamean / amean
