Maslow ranked needs in a hierarchy; two of them are physiological needs (basic survival — food, shelter, met by a basic wage) and safety needs (security of job and life — met by job security, safe conditions and benefits).

Abraham Maslow proposed that human needs arise in a sequence, and a satisfied need no longer motivates. Explaining any two:

1. Physiological needs — These are the most basic needs required to survive: food, water, clothing, shelter and sleep. They sit at the bottom of the hierarchy and must be met first. In the workplace they are satisfied largely through an adequate basic salary or wage that lets the worker meet life's essentials.
