Informal Communication: The Grapevine
Imagine you're in a school corridor between classes. A friend whispers, "Did you hear? The maths teacher might take a leave next week." You turn around and tell another friend, who tells someone else. By lunch, half the class "knows" about it — even though no official announcement was ever made.
That's informal communication in action. It's the natural, unplanned flow of information that happens whenever people interact socially — without following any official hierarchy or channel.
The Intuition
Formal communication is like water flowing through pipes — it follows a fixed route (manager → team lead → employee). Informal communication is like water seeping through soil — it moves in every direction, through cracks and gaps, wherever people happen to connect.
It happens during tea breaks, in WhatsApp groups, over lunch, or even through a quick glance and a raised eyebrow. No memos, no meetings, no official stamp.
The Precise Definition
Informal communication is the exchange of information between individuals in an organisation that occurs outside the officially recognised channels of communication, based on personal relationships, social interactions, and shared interests rather than formal authority or hierarchy.
Key characteristics:
- No fixed path — information can jump from a junior to a senior, or across departments, without following the chain of command.
- Speed — it travels much faster than formal communication because there are no approvals or protocols.
- Unreliable accuracy — messages get distorted, exaggerated, or filtered as they pass from person to person (hence the name "grapevine").
- Emotional content — carries feelings, rumours, gossip, and personal interpretations, not just dry facts.
Why It Matters (for exams)
| Aspect | Formal Communication | Informal Communication |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Prescribed (memos, reports, meetings) | Unstructured (conversations, rumours) |
| Authority | Follows hierarchy | Ignores hierarchy |
| Reliability | High (documented) | Low (can be distorted) |
| Speed | Slow | Very fast |
| Purpose | Official business | Social bonding, information gaps |

- CBSE 2026Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.In an organization, informal communication is stressed upon instead of formal communication which results in non-reaching of proper communication to proper person in proper time. It results in either non-completion or delay in work. Which value has not been violated?(a) Discipline(b) Honesty and loyalty(c) Accountability and responsibility(d) Remuneration
›Reveal solutionSolution
Of the listed values, 'Remuneration' is the one NOT violated by excessive informal communication causing delays.
When informal communication is stressed over the formal chain, messages can be distorted, delayed, or simply not reach the right person at the right time, leading to non-completion or delay of work. This situation compromises several values:
- Discipline — not following the proper official channel of communication is itself indiscipline.
- Honesty and loyalty — an employee bypassing the formal system (perhaps to gossip or act on rumour) can reflect a lack of honest, loyal conduct toward organisational processes.
- Accountability and responsibility — when work is delayed/incomplete because the right information didn't reach the right person, accountability for outcomes is compromised. …

›Reveal solutionSolution
Formal communication goes through official, usually written channels that leave a record, so for proof the answer is (B) Formal.
Formal communication follows the official lines of authority and is often in writing — letters, memos, circulars, reports and emails — which can be filed and referred to later. This written trail provides proof of what was communicated and when. Informal communication (the grapevine) is oral and unofficial, so it leaves no reliable record.

- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.Grapevine is(a) formal communication(b) informal communication(c) barrier to communication(d) lateral communication
›Reveal solutionSolution
Grapevine refers to the informal channel of communication within an organisation — the network of conversations and rumours that travels through personal and social relationships rather than through the organisation's official reporting structure.
Formal communication flows through the officially defined channels of the organisation structure (superior to subordinate and so on), following the chain of command. The grapevine, by contrast, arises spontaneously out of people's social need to talk to each other at work, and it can move in any direction — upward, downward, sideways, even diagonally across departments — regardless of formal hierarchy. It often travels faster than formal communication and can carry both useful information and unverified rumours, which is why managers are advised to stay aware of it (it can be a useful feedback source, but can also spread misinformation if left …
