Planning is futuristic because it is forward-looking — it is always made for the future, based on forecasts of what lies ahead. (Alternative asked in the OR: three limitations of planning are given below.)

Justification — 'Planning is futuristic':

  • Planning means deciding in advance what is to be done; by its very nature it deals with the future, not the past.
  • It requires looking ahead and forecasting future events and conditions (demand, prices, competition) so the organisation is ready for them.
  • The whole purpose of planning is to prepare today for tomorrow — to anticipate changes and meet future challenges.
  • A plan drawn up for a period that has already gone by would serve no purpose; planning is always for a future period.

Thus planning is a forward-looking, futuristic function of management.

  1. Planning leads to rigidity — once plans are made, managers may be unwilling to change them even when circumstances demand it.
