The central bank (in India, the Reserve Bank of India) is the apex institution that controls and regulates the entire banking and monetary system of a country. Three of its important functions are:

  1. Bank of issue (currency authority): The central bank has the sole monopoly of issuing currency notes in the country (except small coins and one-rupee notes issued by the government). This ensures a uniform, stable and well-regulated supply of currency and gives the central bank control over the total money supply.

  2. Banker, agent and adviser to the government: The central bank acts as banker to both the central and state governments — it keeps their accounts, receives their revenues, makes payments on their behalf, manages public debt, and advises the government on economic and monetary matters.
