Gross investment = total spending on capital goods and inventory change in a year, including the amount needed to replace depreciated capital.

Gross investment is the total expenditure incurred by producers on new capital goods — such as machines, tools, buildings and equipment — plus the change in inventories (stocks) during a given year. It is called 'gross' because it is measured before subtracting depreciation.

It can be split into two parts:
