Bt cotton is a transgenic cotton variety engineered with a Bacillus thuringiensis toxin gene so the plant itself produces an insecticidal protein against bollworms.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces crystal (Cry) proteins that are toxic specifically to certain insect larvae. Genetic engineers isolated the Bt toxin gene (e.g. cry1Ac, cry2Ab) and inserted it into the cotton genome, so the plant's own cells synthesise the Cry protein. When a bollworm larva feeds on the transgenic plant, the toxin is activated in its alkaline gut, binds to midgut epithelial receptors, forms pores, and kills the larva — while being harmless to the plant, to humans and to non-target ins …
