Transgenic animals (typically mice, because of their small size and short generation time) are genetically engineered to carry genes associated with particular human diseases. Because the transgenic animal then shows symptoms/pathology similar to that disease, its biology can be studied in far greater detail and under controlled experimental conditions than would ever be possible or ethical in human patients — for example, transgenic mouse models exist for cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
