Transgenic animals carry an added foreign gene so they can synthesise valuable biological products such as human proteins in their milk.

Transgenic animals are animals whose DNA has been manipulated to carry and express an extra (foreign) gene. One important use is the production of biological products required as medicines. The useful product is made by introducing the gene that codes for that product; the animal (and often its milk) then contains the product.
