The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) groups all enzymes into six major classes based purely on the type of chemical reaction they catalyse, not on their substrate identity. Oxidoreductases catalyse oxidation-reduction reactions (e.g., dehydrogenases transferring hydrogen). Transferases move a chemical group - such as an amino or phosphate group - from one molecule to another (e.g., transaminases, phosphotransferases). Hydrolases cleave a bond by adding a water molecule across it, the class that includes most digestive enzymes. Isomerases rearrange a molecule into one of its optical, geometrical or positional isomers without changing its molecular formula.
