(i) A pyramid of numbers graphically shows the number of individuals at each trophic level, usually widest at the producer base and narrowing upward. (ii) An aquatic ecosystem such as a pond functions as a self-sustained unit with abiotic factors and a full complement of producers, consumers and decomposers exchanging energy and matter.

(i) Pyramid of numbers: This pyramid plots the number of individual organisms at each successive trophic level. In most ecosystems (e.g. a grassland), it is upright - a very large number of producers (grasses) support a smaller number of primary consumers (herbivores like insects/deer), which in turn support a still smaller number of secondary consumers (carnivores), and finally very few tertiary consumers at the apex. (Diagram: a triangle divided into horizontal bands, each band narrower than the one below it, labelled from bottom to top - Producers, Primary consumers, Secondary consumers, Tertiary consumers.) Note that this pyramid can be inverted in some ecosystems, e.g. a single large tree (one producer) supporting a large number of insects feeding on it.

(ii) Nature (ethos) of an aquatic ecosystem: Take a pond as a representative aquatic ecosystem. It is a self-contained, self-regulating functional unit of nature comprising:

  • Abiotic components: water and dissolved nutrients/minerals, sunlight penetrating the water, temperature, and dissolved gases (O2, CO2), which set the physical/chemical conditions. …
