The first milk secreted by the mother after childbirth, colostrum, contains antibodies that give the newborn crucial passive immunity, and mother's milk overall is nutritionally ideal for the infant.

After parturition (childbirth), the mammary glands of the mother start producing milk (lactation), stimulated by the hormone prolactin. The milk produced during the initial few days of lactation is called colostrum. It contains several antibodies (mainly IgA) that are absolutely essential to develop resistance/passive immunity for the newborn infant, who does not yet have a fully developed immune system of its own.
