After physical primary treatment (screening, grit removal, sedimentation to remove solids, forming primary sludge), sewage undergoes secondary (biological) treatment:
- The effluent is passed into large aeration tanks, where it is constantly agitated mechanically and air is pumped in. This allows aerobic microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa) to grow vigorously, consuming most of the dissolved organic matter, which significantly reduces the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) — a measure of the organic pollution load — of the effluent.
- During this process, the microbes also form flocs (masses of fungal filaments entangled with bacteria), which settle down as activated sludge; most of the sludge is pumped back into aeration tanks as inoculum ('activated sludge'), and the remainder is passed into large tanks called anaerobic sludge digesters. …
