In co-dominance, a heterozygote shows the phenotypes of both alleles simultaneously and distinctly, rather than a blend or one masking the other.

In simple Mendelian dominance, a dominant allele fully masks a recessive allele in the heterozygote. In co-dominance, however, both alleles of a gene pair are expressed fully and independently in the heterozygous phenotype — neither is dominant nor recessive to the other.
