The law of dominance explains why the F1 shows only the dominant trait and the F2 shows a 3:1 phenotypic ratio, as demonstrated with a Punnett square.

Law of Dominance (Mendel's first principle): Characters are controlled by discrete units called factors (genes), which occur in pairs (alleles). In a dissimilar pair (heterozygote) one member of the pair - the dominant allele - expresses itself and masks the effect of the other - the recessive allele.

Monohybrid cross (plant height): T = tall (dominant), t = dwarf (recessive).

Parents: TT (tall) x tt (dwarf).

Gametes: T and t.

F1: all Tt = tall (the recessive dwarf character is masked - this shows dominance).

Self-pollinate the F1: Tt x Tt. Each parent makes gametes T and t.

Punnett square:

          T t
   +-----------+-----------+
 T | TT | Tt |
   | (Tall) | (Tall) |
   +-----------+-----------+
 t | Tt | tt |
   | (Tall) | (Dwarf) | …
