Q.CH3-CN reacts with 2H2O/H+ (-NH3) to give [A]; [A] reacts with NH3 to give [B]; [B] on heating (Delta, -H2O) gives [C]. Write chemical formula of [A], [B] and [C] in the above reaction sequence.

Step 1: CH3-C(triple bond)N (acetonitrile) is hydrolysed with 2 mol of water under acidic (H+) conditions. This converts the nitrile to a carboxylic acid, releasing NH3 (shown in the question as '-NH3'):
CH3CN + 2H2O --H+--> CH3COOH + NH3
So [A] = CH3COOH (acetic acid / ethanoic acid).
Step 2: Acetic acid [A] reacts with ammonia (an acid-base neutralisation) to form ammonium acetate:
CH3COOH + NH3 -> CH3COONH4
So [B] = CH3COONH4 (ammonium acetate).
