Ambidentate ligands can bond to the metal in more than one way because they have more than one possible donor atom, but only one donor atom is used in any given complex.

Some ligands possess two different atoms, each capable of donating a lone pair to the central metal ion. Such ligands are called ambidentate ligands. Although they have more than one potential donor site, they attach to the metal through only one of these sites at a time (the two forms are linkage isomers of each other).
