A fuel cell is a galvanic cell that converts the chemical energy of a continuously-supplied fuel (H2) and oxidant (O2) directly into electrical energy, with water as the only by-product.

(i) Structure of the H2-O2 fuel cell:

  • Two porous carbon (graphite) electrodes, each coated/impregnated with a catalyst (finely divided platinum or palladium) to speed up the electrode reactions.
  • The electrolyte is concentrated aqueous NaOH or KOH solution, contained between the two electrodes.
  • Hydrogen gas (H2) is continuously bubbled/fed into the compartment at one electrode (the anode); oxygen gas (O2, often from air) is continuously fed into the compartment at the other electrode (the cathode).
  • The two gas streams do not mix directly with each other; ions (OH-) carry the current through the electrolyte between the electrodes, while electrons flow through the external circuit, doing electrical work.

Electrode reactions:

Anode (oxidation): 2H2(g) + 4OH-(aq) -> 4H2O(l) + 4e-

Cathode (reduction): O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- -> 4OH-(aq)

Overall cell reaction: 2H2(g) + O2(g) -> 2H2O(l)
